The creation of Citizenship Amendment Act has set off protest across the country. The act that is passed to address the humanitarian needs, is facing lots of oppose which is probably due to confusion between CAA and NRC.
I have already discussed about CAA in my previous article. Here we will try to understand, What is NRC? History of NRC and about the documents required under NRC. The information here provided is based on NRC rules in Assam.The NRC bill which is expected to be proposed in 2024, is said to be more lenient in comparison to it is now in Assam.

NRC & Its History:
Present Case of NRC :
- Electoral roll(s) up to march 24 (midnight) 1971.
- Land and tenancy record
- Citizenship certificate.
- Permanent residential certificate.
- Refugee Registration certificate.
- Any government issued licence/certificate.
- Government service/employment certificate.
- Bank or Passport office accounts.
- Birth Certificate.
- Educational certificate.
- court records/processes.
- Passport.
- Any LIC policy.
- Birth Certificate.
- Land document.
- Board/University certificate.
- Bank/LIC/Post office records.
- Circle officer/Gram Panchayat secretary certificate in case of married women.
- Electoral roll
- Ration Card
- Any other legally acceptable document.
Above information is based on the NRC rules in Assam, for the nationwide NRC, rules will be different and will be under The Citizenship Rule-2003. An explainer shared by officials said no documents will be required for pre -1971 lineage. Another explainer also gives liberty to "illiterate" in case he/she has no documents, by allowing witness and community verification.
